Moving Checklist
Address Change
Post Office: Give forwarding address 4-6 weeks before moving
Change address on accounts (i.e., credit cards, insurance, etc)
Notify friends and relatives
Notify any delivery services: laundry, newspaper
Change address on your drivers license
Utility Companies
Request final readings on bills (gas, water, electric, trash, telephone, propane, cable, internet) on the date the Buyer takes possession.
Get refunds on any deposits that were made
Contact the utility companies in the city in which you are moving to and inquire about the necessary fees of deposits required for installation of service. You may need a letter of reference.
Medical, Dental, Prescription Histories
Ask your doctor and dentist for referrals.
Transfer needed perscriptions
Obtain birth records, medical records, etc.
And Don't Forget to...
Empty the freezer!
Check with your moving company, for insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor, arrival day, various shipping papers, method and time of expected payment
Plan any needed care for pets, as well as travel plans
Notify children's schools about your move
Notify your church about your move
And On Moving Day...
Carry enough cash or travelers checks to cover costs of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in a new city.
Carry jewelry and documents yourself, or use registered mail
Let close friends or relatives know the route and schedule you will travel including overnight stops; use them as a message headquarters
Double check closets, drawers, shelves to be sure they are empty
Leave old keys, garge door openers, broiler pans, warranties, and instruction manuals needed by the new owner
At Your New Address...
Activate utility services
Check the pilot light on the stove, hot water heater and furnace
Ask post office for mail that they may be holding
Register all vehicles within 5 days of your arrival
Find a new place of worship
Register children in school
Arrange for medical services in your new city
